“No one is an orphan until there is another human being in this world”
True to its saying stands Nagammaiyar Childrens' Home.Thanthai Periyar, the ultimate visionary, started Nagammaiyar Girls' Orphanage in 1959 at Periyar Maaligai, Puthur, Trichy. Those were days when female foeticide was a very common and inevitable act among the society. Annai Maniyammaiyar who strongly opposed the barbaric act,took care of the Home and nurtured abandoned children with utmost care. The Home was started with a meager strength of 13 children which, now cradles 150 children. Orphans were all registered with initials of E.V.R.M and given an identity.
The Womb
Mr.K.Veeramani, the successor of reformation, who now resumes this yeomen service, soon after taking charge of this responsibility changed the Home's name from Nagammaiyar Girls' Orphanage to Nagammaiyar Childrens' Home. Also in 1980 during the centenary celebrations of Thanthai Periyar, Periyar Garden was changed to Periyar Centenary Educational Complex and special permission was obtained from the Government to shift some Educational Institutions and the Home to the new address.With the help of generous contributors a separate building worth Rs. 30 Lakhs consisting of 2 boarding halls, kitchen, dining hall was constructed. The former Honourable Prime Minister Mr.V.P.Singh inaugurated the new building.
So far 1566 helpless women have been directed to a new life through this Home. Moreover with the initiatives done by Mr.K.Veeramani, many children who have studied at the Home have also been placed in Periyar Educational Institutions as Teachers, Engineers, Junior Assistants and also as Office bearers.
The generous reformist along with his wife Thirumathi. Mohana Veeramani who stands as a pillar to the Home frequently visits women from the Home who have been married and settled elsewhere. The children at Home are given special care and are clearly reflected in the results of academic or extra curricular activities. Children of the Home have a number of trophies in sports activities to their credit. Also, they have constantly shown 100% results in their academics, a glimpse of the next generation.
